After taping off the mantel area with painter’s tape, lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper the entire mantle with sandpaper (wrapped around a piece of wood acting as a sanding block). I didn’t sponge off because i wanted the color to be consistent on all of the stones.

Using a 2″ angled brush i worked in small areas, brushing the paint into the seams and then loading up my brush with paint and. Wipe down the stone with a damp sponge until all of the excess grout is gone. Use a roller to apply your primer, but you may still need a brush to go over any missed spots.

All you do is water down your paint (20 to 30%), and brush away. Paint(you may want to use a heat resistant masonry paint depending on the type of fireplace) I had actually been researching just how to paint a stone fireplace.

We watered down white paint to allow the paint to soak in to the stone and maintain the rough look, but still allow the character through. I only used 16 oz and this paint gave me full coverage. Notice there are two beautiful lightings on either side and greeneries on the mantel.
